Artificial slates or natural slates?

In Overijse, we finished the roofing with the Koramic Datura Matt slate black glazed. These roof tiles consist of fiber cement slates. They are more affordable than natural slates and have low energy consumption during production. This roof tile even received the ecolabel DUBOkeur. This way, you know you are working with an ecological and sustainable roof tile.

Roof tiles in (artificial) slates are slightly flatter than, for example, Storm tiles. Therefore, they are not suitable for all roofs. At this property, the slope was steep enough. The roof in Overijse accommodated both a more rural and a more modern style. We think the modern result looks strong. Especially in combination with the solar panels. They were also installed by us.

An asbestos-containing roof

The reason to renovate the roof was the asbestos roofing. We found that the underroof also contained asbestos. It was urgent to address the roof because inhaling asbestos-containing dust particles can cause serious health problems. This was the ideal opportunity for the roofer in Overijse to thoroughly tackle the insulation.

The importance of a vapor barrier and an underroof

If you want your insulation material to last a long time, you want to prevent it from getting damp. If insulation material becomes damp, it insulates less well and you have energy loss. Therefore, it is important to invest in a vapor barrier and an underroof. The vapor barrier installed by the roofer in Overijse prevents the moisture produced by the residents from penetrating into the insulation. This is moisture created by evaporation released by cooking, showering, …

To effectively protect the insulation from external weather conditions, we installed an underroof. Both an underroof and a vapor barrier have a relatively low cost. This small investment cost can be neglected compared to the benefits. Be sure to read our blog post: “An underroof, is that really necessary?”, if you want to know its usefulness.

Cedral Board cladding

We covered the roof edge with Cedral Board. The cladding is easy to maintain and gives a bit of a dreamy feel of a chalet with white boards in the middle of nature.
