What are sarking roofs?
A sarking roof is a method of insulation where the insulation layer is placed on top of the rafters of the roof, on the outside of the roof structure. This technique is mainly used for pitched roofs. The insulation boards are laid directly on the roof framework, often combined with a vapor barrier and an underroof. On top of that comes the final roof covering.
Why choose a sarking roof?
A sarking roof is efficient and sustainable. You don't lose any interior space, and the result is a well-insulated, sturdy, and airtight roof. It also provides a continuous insulation layer, preventing thermal bridges and improving the thermal performance of the roof. Sarking is perfect for renovation or for additional insulation of roofs without major interior work.
The benefits at a glance:
- You retain your full interior space
- Excellent thermal and acoustic insulation
- Can be installed quickly (provided you hire experienced roofers)
- Ideal for renovation without affecting the interior finish
- Fully airtight and therefore energy-efficient
- No more thermal bridges
- Suitable for all pitched roofs
